Professor Dr. med. Klemens Budde, from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, was invited by the European Commission to speak as an expert in a workshop on Data Donation for Health Purposes on the 24th of May in Luxembourg. During his statement, Prof. Dr. med. Klemens Budde informed the EC about the infographics on regulations for big data technologies in the healthcare sector in European countries developed by the BigMedilytics project.

Prof. Dr. med. Klemens Budde summarized the type of data that will be most feasible for donation for the healthcare related purposes and other public policy, and under what conditions. He emphasised the need to combine data from different data silos, since interoperability is key for success, and the necessity to focus on the benefits for patients.

The workshop, which brought together Commission staff and external experts, covered all aspects of data donation from wording, to ethical and legal challenges. It informed the Commission’s approach to the topic of developing better data for research, disease prevention, and personalised medicine. The experts concluded that such a data donation is clearly useful and wanted by patients and researchers.
