The keys to create a successful collaboration between healthcare professionals and data scientists

28 July, 2021

Medical professionals often need to collaborate with different professionals such as lawyers, technicians, and ethicists to start data initiatives in healthcare organizations. Despite the relevant differences between such disciplines, some strategies can be used so that healthcare professionals and data scientists can recognize all the nuances, efforts, and workarounds in practice that will make big data projects fruitful.

In a new video released with the lessons learned in the BigMedilytics project, Dr. Marthe Stevens and Prof. Antoinette de Bont from the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management present the working elements of successful cooperation between medical professionals and data scientists.

Three lessons can be learned from the BigMedilytics project:

  • Medical practitioners and data scientists work with different sets of ideas, norms, and assumptions about acceptable forms of knowledge generation.
  • Differences are enlarged when healthcare professionals and data scientists did not take the time to learn about the other discipline and understand their reasoning.

Differences are resolved when healthcare professionals and data scientists meet and work together at the same location, develop a shared language, ask questions about each other work.
