Successful presence of BigMedilytics at the European Big Data Value Forum 2020

9 November, 2020

The BigMedilytics project was widely represented at the European Big Data Value Forum 2020 that took place virtually between the 3rd and the 5th of November 2020 under the theme “Building a strong European Data and AI Ecosystem”. The project was one of the sponsors of the event, had a booth, and organized its own session on the 5th of November. Moreover, BigMedilytics was presented in the Health Main session on the same day and during the AI in Healthcare session on the 4th of November.

The project’s session “Improving healthcare through big data. Last findings of BigMedilytics” gathered more than 120 attendees interested in knowing the current status of some of the pilots. The session was chaired by Alexandra Muñoz, science communicator at INCLIVA, who introduced the project goals, and featured the participation of Wiebke Düttmann-Rehnolt, M.D. at Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin; Dimitrios Vogiatzis, a research associate at NCSR “Demokritos”, and Georg Langs, chief scientist and co-founder at contextflow, who offered an overview and demo of the pilots on Kidney disease, Lung cancer, and Radiology workflows respectively.

Dr. Wiebke Düttmann-Rehnolt introduced the kidney disease pilot whose goal is to reduce hospitalizations and graft loss for kidney transplant patients. The pilot uses big data analytics and machine learning to help reveal patterns and risk factors that are relevant for long-term transplant survival.

Dr. Dimitrios Vogiatzis presented the current status of the lung-cancer pilot that currently aims to drill into sub-populations of patients, through filtering so as to facilitate personalised decisions. In particular, the factors that are related to the length of hospitalization, as well as the services used before being diagnosed with lung cancer will be demonstrated. Moreover, the pilot provides direct access to the lung-cancer knowledge graph, as well as a question-answer module focused on oncological drugs.

While Georg Langs run a demonstration of the scientific methodology behind contextflow’s 3D image search and disease pattern detection for radiologists using artificial intelligence.

A highlighted project in the Health Main Session

Also on the 5th of November, Maria-Esther Vidal, head of the Scientific Data Management Group and Professor at the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) presented the project during the Health Main Session that attracted more than 170 viewers.

BigMedilytics in the AI in Healthcare Whitepaper

Mónica Caballero, R+D Project Manager at Everis —Exteran Exploitation Partner of BigMedilytics— introduced the project during the session on AI in Healthcare on the 4th of November that involved more than 200 attendees. This is due to the fact that BigMedilytics is one of the successful use cases included in the AI in Healthcare Whitepaper published by BDVA Task Force and presented during this session.

The whitepaper gives a viewpoint of European stakeholders on AI in healthcare. It documents the outcome of a literature study, an online survey, and a physical workshop with healthcare experts of the BDVA community covering academia, industry, and government that took place during the BigMedilytics event in September 2019.

EBDVF 2020

The European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) is the flagship event of the European Big Data and Data-Driven AI Research and Innovation community organized by the Big Data Value Association (BDVA) and the European Commission (DG CNECT). The 2020 edition was organized in collaboration with DFKI, Plattform Industrie 4.0, Plattform Lernende Systeme, and Berlin Partner. Due to COVID-19 this edition was virtual and gathered more than 2,000 participants representing industry professionals, business developers, researchers, and policymakers.

Presentations coming soon! Stay tuned!
